HIPPO- Species Spotlight
The hippopotamus is simply awesome to see in person. It truly humbles you to be near such a giant. The two species of hippo still remaining are the Eastern African hippo and the pygmy hippo (not in this video.) There are only an estimated 125000 to 150000 hippos left throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. They are threatened by illegal poaching, and by habitat loss and hippos are legally culled (killed) by some governments and their meat and ivory teeth are sold. They are also hunted by trophy …

WHITE RHINO- Species Spotlight
The Rhino is one Africa’s Big Five.
The white rhino is the largest of the remaining 5 species of rhinoceros.
They are divided into the southern and northern white rhinos. It is thought the northern rhino is extinct in the wild due to poaching, and only a handful remain in captivity.
Some research shows the southern wild population numbers around 11,000, but the IUCN red list list shows over 17,000.
At any rate, even though the white rhino has the largest numbers of any of the rhino species, it still is endangered and needs our help.
(On a side note-the IUCN recently took the Asian greater one horned rhino of the endangered red list, but I along with others feel it is still needs the protection given by that status)
There are over 700 white rhinos in captivity world wide. The rhino is one of the few larger animals that can be introduced into the wild. Meaning a captive born white or black rhino could make its way to Africa. Recently in October 2008, a white rhino was born via artificial insemination at the Budapest Zoo.
Even with protection they can still be legally trophy hunted in areas of South Africa. I find this to be counter productive with all the time and money going into increasing their numbers. I think we have to get it into our mind set that ALL rhinos need not to be killed. *They can also be green hunted in which a tranquilizer gun is used to and the hunter gets a picture next to their “kill.” These are less expensive, but not as popular as a regular hunt.
The rhino horn is still found on the billion dollar animal black market which is driven mostly by China and the US.

carlmannoutfitting.com Presents: Trophy Mule Deer Hunting
Carl Mann’s Montana Experience Outfitters offers one of Montana’s best areas in the state for big bucks. The Northeast corner of Montana has the highest success rate for big bucks anywhere in the state. 98% of our hunters go home with a trophy mule deer, whitetail, elk and/or an antelope buck. We know this is a bold statement, but after outfitting for over 30 years we don’t know of any other place where you may see as many as a 100 deer in a single day - and 20 of them will be bucks. Out of that 20, about 2 or 3 may be wall hangers. After you have filled your buck tag with your big buck we are glad to take you out after wily coyotes or perhaps some bird hunting. This hunt coincides with the mating season at the peak of the rut for the bucks of the Missouri River breaks. This hunt is for the discriminate mule deer hunter who would like to hang a trophy buck on the wall. At this time of year the big bucks seem to come out of their hiding places and make themselves available as they move all day long across the prairie in search of does in heat. The bucks are more plentiful and are very visual. Your chances of taking a wall hanging 4×4 or 5×5 are 90-100%. I can put you within 225 yards, standing broadside to one of these magnificent bucks.

WHITE DEER - ACTION SHOTS RARE WHITE WILD WHITETAIL BUCK
Action shots in a natural setting of a wild, white (piebald) Virginia White-tailed buck. This rare, unusual animal was photographed several times on our farm.
At least 6 other white deer were seen at different times in the same area. One was pure white, about a foot taller than the other deer, and had a huge rack. Another deer had a large band or belt of white fur around its middle like a Poland China hog. Its twin was white, but the only time I filmed the white twin was in a split second as it jumped behind a tree (it had been standing by the banded deer and their mother). A white fawn was seen once. Around 30 years ago, many area people saw a white deer with a black spot. A sixth white deer was seen and photographed along our river valley (Alum Creek, in Ohio).
This deer also had a sort of concave nose — one with an enlargement in the front of the face - that some of the deer in the area had. I doubt that inbreeding caused this whiteness, because these were wild deer. There were many deer in the area at that time. Now with development, there are fewer deer and fewer white deer.
Piebald, albino, “white,” and “black” whitetail deer are very rare. In Bolder Junction, Wis., a man once photographed 3 albino deer standing together. The odds of doing this in wild deer have been calculated as astronomical — 1 in 79 billion. Such calculations are based on assumptions. For example, the odds of finding an albino deer are often calculated as 1 in 30,000. Less than 1 % of whitetail deer are piebald. However seeing either a wild piebald or an albino deer is considered a once in a lifetime experience.
Black or Melanistic whitetails are very, very rare, and much rarer than either white piebald or albino deer. A person can recognize a melanistic deer because they produce too much of the pigment known as melanin and this makes them much darker than a typical whitetail. Of the millions of deer taken each year only a very few with melanism have been reported. Most people don’t know they even exist because of their extreme rarity. A melonistic buck is a true trophy. Some melanistic whitetails are very dark and some are even pure black. Only 1 has, so far, been photographed here as shown below:

White deer and white buffalo figure prominently in the legends of people throughout the world. Sometimes these animals are considered ghosts and at other times presage an omen. The Chickasaw, Seneca, Apache, Aztec, Cheyenne, Lenca, Cherokee, Pawnee, Sioux, Shasta, Algonquin, Pawnee, Sioux, Lakota and many other groups have legends about white deer. Such animals are so strange in appearance that they immediately capture interest and make people watch for them. (These were wild deer on our farm taped by Scott and extracted from longer films.)
** Some of the world’s largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio’s Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. That title of the largest whitetail, ever, in the record books belongs to the “Missouri Monarch,” a 333-7/8 buck found dead on the side of a road in 1982 near St. Louis. In second place is the legendary “Hole in the Horn,” found dead in Ohio in 1940, however, many whitetail experts think that it is actually the largest set of whitetail deer antlers in history. It may be the most famous whitetail known.
The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 500 pounds http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:7cLce5HsdasJ:espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/s/h_deer_forecast05_MN.html+heaviest+whitetail&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us
and the female up to 175 pounds.
